Buffalo Creek flooding is a flood that occurs when water starts to flow into a stream that is part of a creeking system. The water that is caused by this type of flooding takes a lot of time to find its own level. Buffalo Creek flooding is most common in southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
This is not the first time that this has happened here in the Chicago area. In 2005, when the creek was finally channeled over a bridge, it took over a year and half to get the water out. That’s no easy task when you consider that a stream only has a few feet of width. Because of this, the water quickly fills in the space it was taken from. I have personally seen this happen at times and it takes a lot of time for this to get under control.
In my own personal experience, the flooding of a creek can be like playing a game of whack-a-mole and keep coming back for more. This is because it is the case that, in the same space are multiple streams which feed into the creek. At times, the water can be so high that it can create a barrier between an area and the main creek. Sometimes the river will stop flowing altogether. You might even see water flowing through the street when you are walking.
As bad as the water is, it is not the worst thing that can happen to your town. For example, during the great flood of 1923, a town in Minnesota was inundated with water from an upstream stream. This flood swept away everyone, including many children. In the aftermath of that flood, only three people were left (the rest had drowned), and they were all men. In another instance, a town in South Dakota was flooded with water.
Buffalo creek is just one of the many rivers that run through our town. It is a part of the Mississippi River that flows into the Missouri River. So our town of Buffalo creek has a lot of water from the Missouri River and surrounding streams. Just four days ago, a water line broke along the Missouri River in the town. The water from this break had an estimated 200,000 gallons of water in it.
In the town of Buffalo creek, the water in this river caused a high tide, which in turn caused flooding. The town of Buffalo creek was completely underwater from the high tide because the flood water was so deep. So the town of Buffalo creek was completely inundated.
There were no injuries and no major damage, but the flooding is a reminder of what’s possible in the flood-prone Missouri River. It’s also a reminder that you can’t always count on the water to stay level.
The Missouri River (which is actually the Mississippi River) has been inundated in the past. The flood in Buffalo creek is a reminder that not every spring or summer is like the one I remember back in the day.
Here, the Missouri River has a different story. It’s not as big and raging as the Missouri River used to be, but it’s still a major river. And it’s still getting bigger and more dangerous. Floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina are still flooding homes today in New Orleans, despite the fact that most homes have been evacuated.
When the Missouri floods, it seems almost inevitable that there will be flooding in New Orleans, but it doesn’t seem to be as bad as Katrina. The flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina was the worst in the history of the city, but the flooding caused by the Missouri is still pretty bad.
