you can’t stop thinking, or you will simply not think at all. A calm environment is a good thing, but it doesn’t mean you won’t be thinking. What does mean is that you can’t stop yourself from thinking about it.
The problem is that when you stop thinking, you stop thinking about anything. This is why some people can be good at solving problems by themselves but not others. It is not that you can’t solve problems by yourself, it is simply that you can’t find a way to stop yourself from thinking about the problem.
That’s why I love to help my clients think up solutions to their problems. I can then use the solution to solve other problems as well. I can do this by using brainstorming exercises, to break down complex problems into more manageable chunks.
A good brainstorming technique is to ask yourself, “What could I do to make the situation better?” If you want to start a conversation about a problem, say, for example, “Well that sucks,” and then start talking about how to fix it.
